Both rooms: the door

Age and ID at either door

Casino Nova Scotia Halifax and Casino Nova Scotia Sydney admit guests 19 and older, and both check ID. The check below walks through the door step by step, from age and ID to theatre, golf and self-exclusion rules.

Step by step

The age is 19

The gambling age in Nova Scotia is 19. Atlantic Lottery products are 19+, and the casino operator restricts both casinos to guests 19 and older. The Gaming Control Act puts it in legal terms: it bars anyone under the age of majority from playing a game of chance in a casino.

That age rule does not stop at the gaming floor. Every event at the Bruce Guthro Theatre in the Halifax casino is 19+. In Sydney, guests must be 19 or older to enter the casino and the golf simulators. The operator keeps this 19+ policy at its casinos and uses ID scanning devices.

Through the door, step by step

Fill in four things. Each gate lights up in turn; the first gate that stops you ends the walk.

Photo ID you will carry
  1. 1
    Age 19 or older

  2. 2
    Government photo ID

  3. 3
A second card, if you look under 30

  4. 4
    Not self-excluded

  • Both casinos, the theatre and the golf simulators are 19+.
  • Bring government photo ID: a driver's licence, passport or provincial ID card.
  • If you look under 30, a second piece of ID may be asked: another of those, a provincial health card, a credit or debit card, or similar identification.
  • Voluntary Self-Exclusion covers both casinos, their restaurants and entertainment venues; a self-excluded person cannot win prizes.

Staff decide who looks under 30; the second card is asked at the door, not booked ahead.

Which ID to bring

At the Halifax casino, entry needs valid government photo ID. Three kinds count: a driver's licence, a passport or a provincial ID card. Guests who look younger than 30 may be asked for a second piece of valid ID. That second piece can be another of the three, a provincial health card, a credit or debit card or similar identification.

ID scanning devices are in use, and the operator asks guests under 30 to show valid government-issued ID. Sydney adds one point about the bar. Anyone there who looks under 30 must show valid government photo ID to be served alcohol. A health card or a bank card can serve as the second piece, not the first.

Rules beyond the gaming floor

  • Bruce Guthro Theatre, Halifax: no bags or backpacks, and no cameras, drones or recording devices. Outside food and drink are not allowed either.
  • Theatre box office: it opens 60 minutes before each show and takes debit, American Express, MasterCard and Visa, but no cash. Tickets are sold through Ticketmaster.
  • Golf simulators, Sydney: bookings are by phone at 902-563-7703, up to one month ahead, for at least 1 hour. The last booking of the day is taken at 10 p.m.
  • Player's Club card: one loyalty card for both casinos. Getting one needs age 19 or older, valid government-issued photo ID and a short application.

Self-exclusion covers both doors

Voluntary Self-Exclusion (VSE), a ban a person places on themselves, covers both casinos, Halifax and Sydney. It applies to the gaming floor, restaurants and entertainment venues, with Centre 200 excluded. Terms are 6 months, one year, three years or indefinite. A self-excluded person cannot win prizes, cash or otherwise.

Signing up can start with any casino staff member. The Responsible Gambling Resource Centre handles sign-ups too, at 902-424-8663 in Halifax and 902-563-3797 in Sydney. Off-site, the Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel and Tobacco Division of Service Nova Scotia takes sign-ups in Halifax or Sydney. The program is described on yourbestbet.ca.

Questions

Short answers

Is a health card enough on its own?
No, a health card is not enough. Entry needs valid government photo ID: a driver's licence, passport or provincial ID card. A provincial health card can be the second piece for guests who look younger than 30.
Can someone under 19 go to a show at the theatre?
No, that is not possible. All events at the Bruce Guthro Theatre are 19+.
Will a guest over 30 need a second ID?
The second piece is asked of guests who look younger than 30. A guest over 30 who looks younger may still be asked, so carrying a second card makes sense.
Does a self-exclusion signed in Halifax cover Sydney?
Yes, it covers Sydney too. Voluntary Self-Exclusion applies to both casinos, including their restaurants and entertainment venues, with Centre 200 excluded.
