Two rooms
Two casinos, two different rooms
Nova Scotia has two casinos, in Halifax and Sydney. Both are run by Casino Nova Scotia, which is owned by Great Canadian Entertainment. One loyalty card, the Player's Club, works in both.
Casino Nova Scotia Halifax is at 1983 Upper Water St. It has live table games, played at real tables, and poker. It also has a high-limit area, a room with higher table limits, and the Bruce Guthro Theatre. Live tables and poker are at the Halifax casino only.
In Cape Breton, Casino Nova Scotia Sydney is at 525 George St. It has slot machines, electronic table games, which are table games played on machines, and golf simulators. The golf simulators are found only in Sydney, and there are no live tables or poker. Counts from April 2025: Halifax had 587 slot machines and 28 table games. Sydney had 280 slot machines and no table games.

Which is nearer
Which one is nearer
The two casinos are 312 km apart in a straight line. Of 55 towns and cities of Nova Scotia on the map, 39 are nearer to Halifax and 16 to Sydney. The line where both are equally far passes between Trenton and Antigonish. Trenton and New Glasgow are nearer to Halifax. Antigonish, Mulgrave, Canso and every Cape Breton town on the map are nearer to Sydney.
Antigonish is 165 km from Halifax and 151 km from Sydney. These are straight lines between map points, not road distances, and roads are longer, especially across water. The tool below places a chosen town on a line between the two casinos and opens the road route in Google Maps.
Which room is nearer?
Every dot is a town, placed on the line by how far it is from each casino. Pick your town: the line shows which room pulls harder, and the routes open in Google Maps.
Halifax is nearer to Truro by 173 km in a straight line.

Hours
Hours the casinos publish
In Halifax, live table games run daily from 2 p.m. to 3 a.m. The high-limit area is open daily from 5 p.m. to 4 a.m. Poker runs Wednesday to Saturday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. In Sydney, the golf simulators run daily from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., and the last booking is taken at 10 p.m.
Neither casino publishes hours for its slot floor, and this guide does not print restaurant hours. All times are Atlantic time, the clock of both casinos. A time after midnight belongs to the night before: 1 a.m. on Saturday is still Friday night. Holiday hours should be checked on the casinos' own page.
Both rooms at one hour
Pick a day and a time. Each row is a part of a casino; each column is a room. "Not published" means the casino gives no hours for it.
| Part of the casino | Halifax | Sydney |
|---|---|---|
| Slot floor | hours not published | hours not published |
| Live table games | daily 2 p.m. to 3 a.m. | no live tables in Sydney |
| High-limit area | daily 5 p.m. to 4 a.m. | none published |
| Poker | Wednesday to Saturday, 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. | no poker in Sydney |
| Golf simulators | no golf simulators in Halifax | daily 11 a.m. to 3 a.m.; last booking 10 p.m. |
| Restaurant and bar | 3Sixty, May Garden: hours on the casinos' page | Celtic Junction: hours on the casinos' page |
Atlantic time in both rooms. Past midnight the grid still counts the night before, so Saturday at 1 a.m. is Friday night.
At the door
At the door
Both casinos admit guests 19 and older, and the same age applies to the Bruce Guthro Theatre and the golf simulators. The operator uses ID scanning devices, and guests under 30 must show valid government-issued ID. In Halifax, accepted photo ID is a driver's licence, passport or provincial ID card. A guest there who looks younger than 30 may be asked for a second piece. It can be another of those, a provincial health card, a credit or debit card or similar identification.
Voluntary Self-Exclusion covers both casinos: the gaming floor, restaurants and entertainment venues, with Centre 200 excluded. A self-excluded person cannot win prizes, cash or otherwise. The check below walks through each step.
Through the door, step by step
Fill in four things. Each gate lights up in turn; the first gate that stops you ends the walk.
- 1Age 19 or older
- 2Government photo ID
- 3A second card, if you look under 30
- 4Not self-excluded
- Both casinos, the theatre and the golf simulators are 19+.
- Bring government photo ID: a driver's licence, passport or provincial ID card.
- If you look under 30, a second piece of ID may be asked: another of those, a provincial health card, a credit or debit card, or similar identification.
- Voluntary Self-Exclusion covers both casinos, their restaurants and entertainment venues; a self-excluded person cannot win prizes.
Staff decide who looks under 30; the second card is asked at the door, not booked ahead.
Tab one: Halifax

The Halifax casino
Live tables on the main floor offer Blackjack, Roulette and Let it Ride, plus one variant each of Blackjack and Texas Hold'Em. Let it Ride is played on Fridays and Saturdays. Table minimums and the choice of games depend on how busy the casino is. The electronic table games, which are table games played on machines, are $3 Craps and $5 Blackjack. Paid parking is on site; the price is not published.
Food is at 3Sixty, a restaurant and lounge with a bar and live bands, and at the May Garden restaurant. Buffet specials run at 3Sixty on Fridays and Saturdays. The Bruce Guthro Theatre is 19+ for all events, allows no bags or backpacks, and lists current shows on its page. The casino is set to move to a purpose-built site at Dartmouth Crossing. Until then the waterfront casino keeps operating as normal.
Tab two: Sydney
The Sydney casino
Sydney has no live table games and no poker. Those are at the Halifax casino only. The electronic table games here, table games played on machines, are $3 Blackjack and $1 Roulette. For food, the Celtic Junction Bar & Grille is a restaurant and bar with a full menu; its hours are not printed in this guide.
Golf simulators are only at the Sydney casino. There are two bays, each for up to 6 golfers, with more than 200 courses. Bookings are by phone at 902-563-7703, up to one month ahead, for at least 1 hour. Groups and company events call 902-563-7794. A booking is released if nobody arrives within 15 minutes.

The province
Who runs gambling in Nova Scotia
The Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC) conducts and manages regulated gambling in the province. It is a Crown corporation, a company owned by the provincial government. NSGC oversees two operators, Atlantic Lottery and Casino Nova Scotia, which run the day-to-day business. Great Canadian Entertainment has operated Casino Nova Scotia for more than 20 years on behalf of NSGC. Atlantic Lottery runs ticket lottery, video lottery and sports betting products, and is owned by the four Atlantic provincial governments.
Regulation is a separate job. The Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel and Tobacco (AGFT) Division of Service Nova Scotia is the regulator. It licenses and monitors casinos, bingos, lotteries and other games of chance, except harness racing. The division is separate from NSGC and from the operators.

Online
Online casinos and this guide
The provincially regulated online site in Nova Scotia is alc.ca, run by Atlantic Lottery for NSGC. It has offered online tickets and an online casino since July 2022. Atlantic Lottery's position is that it is the only fully legal, government-regulated online gambling provider in Atlantic Canada. It also says other sites cannot legally operate or advertise there, and that an overseas licence does not change this. Nova Scotia has no licensing scheme for private online casino operators.
This guide's paid links, marked Ad, lead to a private online casino partner. That partner is not a provincial site and is not run, approved or licensed by Nova Scotia. It has no connection with either casino, and the guide earns a commission from it.
